Prateeksha Nagar is the beginning of CHIP in Mumbai. Adopted on February 5, 2004 Prateeksha Nagar CHIP’s principal project as CHIP works to make it a model school.
In 2004 when CHIP Mumbai began work Prateeksha Nagar School was in terrible condition, with inadequate sanitation or drinking water, poor class facilities, with goodas using the school yard and breaking in at night to steal the schools fans, lights and drinking water.
The first thing that CHIP Mumbai did was instill 24 hour security on the premises to keep these bad elements out of the reach of children: creating a safe, stable and secure learning environment. CHIP then began the long process of remodeling the school.
This included brightly painting the classrooms, providing adequate fans and lighting, clean drinking water and toilets, an activity room for extra-curricular activities, a set of computers, a library, proper classroom furniture and boards. Outside of the school CHIP constructed a lovely garden, a play structure, a stage, an outdoor shed and a grass area for playing sports.
The children now enjoy a safe and clean school with regular outdoor activities provided by CHIP partner Magic bus, weekend computer courses, a library with over 5000 books and a Balwadi class has recently been formed.
In the area of health CHIP has been providing regular health camps. These camps examine the children in terms of eye care, deworming, Vitamin A, immunizations, and general check up. Our health program also provides workshops for the children and parents on proper nutrition, and health and hygiene. The promotion of health lifestyle ensures healthy lives. A child can not study well if they are not fed well.
Our work in Prateeksha Nagar school has only just begun we have many more programmes for the school that will be joining the already long list.
